Netherfriends at Schubas

Shawn Rosenblatt, otherwise known as Netherfriends, played this summer at Schubas and found some time to sit down with me and talk about his musical endeavors.
"I think I just wanted to do a project that would keep me motivated," Shawn said about his latest album, Middle America.
He's been on the road for about two years, and is working on his Sufjan Stevens-esque 50 states project, with a song for every state (much more feasible than an album for each, Sufjan).
The show brought a large crowd. He looped his vocals and instruments all over the place, and was joined onstage by several other musicians. I was surprised when the show ended- I enjoyed the set so much that I barely realized time was passing.

Now you can enjoy the sounds of Netherfriends every Monday, since he'll be doing a residency at Schubas. Each live performance will be recorded as part of a new album.

Sounds of Summer: The Postelles 6/17

It was a beautiful Friday night in the city and while all the usual debauchery was going down in Wicker Park, I retreated north to Schubas and watched The Postelles play to a full house of enthusiastic 20-somethings.

I saw these charming Manhattan natives open for Free Energy at Double Door back in January and had been itching to see them since. Their sound has been compared to that of The Strokes, The Kooks and Neon Indian yet there is also a bit of soulful flair in front man Daniel Balk's voice that is both familiar and refreshing. (Coincidentally as I'm writing this, Sam Cooke is playing and I think how awesome it would be to hear them cover a song *wink, wink*:)

The Postelles took the stage at 11:30 sharp playing a sweet but slightly short set that not even your boyfriend could help but dance to. Highlights included a fantastic rendition of Elvis' "Hound Dog", a new "written-on-the-road" song called Running Red Lights, and crowd favorites White Night, Stella and Sleep On The Dancefloor. Aside from a startling smack in the head from an overzealous fan, I thoroughly enjoyed the night from start to finish. These guys play straight up rock n' roll like seasoned vets, no computer bullshit needed. And that voice.. well let's just say I can't seem to get enough.

I highly recommend getting their freshly released self-titled debut album and playing that thaang all summer long.. Also, check out their latest video below for Sleep On The Dancefloor, but trust me, you won't be!

Elizabeth & The Catapult

Starting things off Elizabeth announced she wouldn't be at the show if it wasn't for Chicago, turns out her parents met at University of Chicago, which she was excited to deliver to the crowd. The bright eyed and cheery Elizabeth was wearing a tutu, yes, a tutu, she completely pulled it off though! She looked absolutely adorable! Not only is she chipper, her voice and songs are amazingly fun and catchy and I really enjoyed her performance! Recently opening for OAR, Elizabeth & The Catapult is looking like its going no where but up to the top! Be sure to check her out, you can go here to see upcoming shows!

The Civil Wars - Husband/Wife duo

I first heard The Civil Wars a few months ago, at first listen I was hooked on this pair. Their bluegrass style music was a instant hit and on repeat on my iPod. Their newest full length album "Barton Hollow" released just this February.

The duo has incredible chemistry on stage, and are very entertaining to watch with their cute banter back and forth with each other. Their voices blend so well together, and their music brings a instant uplift in spirit.

Elizabeth & the Catapult -- lures you in like a cup of joe!

Elizabeth & the Catapult are on tour! I just recently heard of the band, and can't get enough of "The Other Side of Zero" album. The song "(Time) We All Fall Down" is such an amazing song, it's just so up beat and soothing. Singer Elizabeth Ziman lures you in like a morning cup of joe. You can't help but to smile while listening to the album, not in a scary, why is this lady smiling feeling, just the feeling of joy, and this day will be good way.
