21 Hours of Dance: Highlights from Spring Awakening

A sea of neon swarmed onto Soldier Field this past weekend for Spring Awakening, a festival solely dedicated to electronic dance music. The venue witnessed more color than the usual blue and orange clad Bears fans, to say the least. Attendees displayed their excitement with vibrant fishnets, perky tutus, glitter, and every neon hue of the rainbow imaginable. Their ensembles were intricately assembled to fit the vibe of this electronic world that has become the newest trend in music.

These excited, high-powered fans ranged from tweens to baby boomers. Each day consisted of 10.5 hours of music emanating from four different stages. The energy stayed high through the wee hours and fans did not cease to head bob aggressively. Grooving was optional.

From Saturday morning to Sunday night, every DJ that performed had a distinct sound and stage presence. LoBOUNCE’s enthusiasm had him singing along to his own mixes while Gun Love sampled one of my favorites, M83’s Midnight City. Porn and Chicken had a vivacious entourage on stage dancing wildly. And by the end of Saturday, Skrillex’s light beams emerged during a patch of rain as he DJ-ed from a futuristic spacecraft structure.

On Sunday, the NERVO duo performed to a packed tent with fans trying to squish in for a glimpse of the lovely and spunky twin sisters. Datsik went old school Snoop Dogg when he cleverly mixed Gin and Juice (pun intended) and Diplo’s set immediately followed changing the mood with tribal accents by throwing in some Major Lazer tracks. The night ended with Dutch DJ Afrojack playing his catchy hit songs while the crowd simultaneously fist pumped and sang along.

The production of the fest ran smoothly with the fastest set changes I have ever seen and a sufficient amount of security scattered throughout festival grounds. The weekend lived up to its potential and fully satisfied its passionate crowd.

Music Festival Fashion

Rosie Huntington Whitely @ Coachella

With Spring Awakening Festival this weekend, and all the other Chicago fests coming up, I figured on this Tuesday afternoon, we all need something to look forward to, and who doesn't love so good ol fashion festival fashion. It really strings back to the roots of how SOTW got started as well, with the whole concept of music festival fashion and music joining forces. One of my main inspirations was attending Coachella Music Festival (2009) for the first time, I couldn't believe how fashionable everyone was, the polo fields were more of a runway then anything and sense then the whole concept of festival fashion has grown more and more.

Unveiling the Conspiracy

Stic catches up with Mikul and Louis from Midnight Conspiracy on the upcoming Spring Awakening festival, exciting summer plans, and the meaning behind their stage presence.

SOTW: This summer Soldier Field will house the first Spring Awakening music festival. What are your thoughts on the festival’s potential and playing a large venue like the stadium?

MC: I remember watching the Depeche Mode 101 documentary as a kid and seeing their massive shows on the Music for the Masses tour in other stadiums like the Rose Bowl, and thinking "now that's majorly epic." Hopefully in Spring Awakening we'll have the return of arena rock but instead of bands like The Cure and Depeche Mode, you'll have DJs and electronic acts. Boy, things have changed.

SOTW: What are your opinions on the overall artist selection at Spring Awakening?

MC: It’s a pretty solid, awesome lineup. As opposed to other festivals it will be all EDM (electronic dance music), which is exciting. Lollapalooza has a lot more mainstream bands. This will be the first fest in Chicago that is pretty much all electronic.

SOTW: In your opinion, what is the best thing a fan can do during a live Midnight Conspiracy performance? What do you like to see when looking at the crowd?

MC: Go HAM, as the kids like to say these days. We like seeing crowd surfing; mosh pits are also great. At Lolla there was a pretty big mosh pit when we performed so hopefully we can repeat that at Spring Awakening.

SOTW: Can you explain your stage presence and props used such as the illuminated pyramid that contains the outline of an eye?

MC: We have a 16-foot eye in the shape of our triangle logo that we perform out of, for our "Eye Live" shows. It has LEDs and a full on laser light show. The Midnight Conspiracy logo (a pyramid with an eye) is far from the Illuminati stereotype that people associate with it. If you listen to our intro from our shows, it suggests there's an elite few, a new world order, that overly influences our lives, and our eye represents the truth and inner vision to expose these oppressors. The "all seeing eye" has been used long before its association with the Illuminati.

SOTW: What is your favorite festival attire when performing and/or attending?

MC: We get a lot of clothes from All Saints like leather jackets, jeans and shirts. So, we’re usually rocking that, but black leather isn't always the best in the heat of the summer. At North Coast Music Festival we were coordinating black outfits, but it was so hot, I had to rip off my shirt and leave a bare chest and stomach under my leather. It was my trashiest moment. Hopefully there won't be a repeat of that.

SOTW: Summer is right around the corner; what are your goals and excitements for summer 2012?

MC: Spring Awakening will kick off the summer. We’ll also be releasing a new single called "Eyes in the Sky", a new EP as well as all the remixes for our last single, "The Eye."

Awakening to Chicago's New Electronic Reality

Soldier Field will become a laser light spectacle on Saturday June 16th and Sunday June 17th for the Spring Awakening music festival, an electronic affair hosted by React Presents and the Congress Theater. Chicago’s newest fest will feature over 70 artists, including Afrojack, Skrillex, Benny Benassi, and A-Trak.

The event was first hosted in 2008, but it has since outgrown its original 4,800 person capacity venue in the Congress Theater. The move is Soldier Field’s first foray into the dance-music fest sphere.

Keep checking Stic-of-the-Week for an upcoming exclusive interview with Midnight Conspiracy who will be performing that weekend!
