I have been obsessing over 'Black Up' from Seattle hip-hop duo Shabazz Palaces. After teasing listeners with two EPs in 2009 the group (made up of Ishmael "Butterfly" Butler and Tendai Maraire) released their first full length on Sub Pop on June 28th. The album is complex, unpredictable, occassionally discordant and musically challenging; not surprising since Butler cut his MC teeth in Digable Planets and Maraire is trained in Zimbabwean classical music.
According to The Stranger, they have a sick live show. If you live in Chicago or are in town for the Pitchfork Music Festival, you could see them twice this weekend if you felt so inclined! Catch them at 3:45pm on Sunday at Pitchfork Music Festival and/or see them open for Moonface at Lincoln Hall on Saturday night (10pm, 18+, $15).
